Life Drawing Evening Class at Anglia
Ruskin University
Monday Evenings 7.00 - 9.15 pm. In the Life Room, Ruskin Building, Anglia Ruskin
University.
General Description
The group is suitable for those with some
drawing experience. I suggest previous experience of two terms life
drawing or an art A level. We have a model each week and you
can draw with any medium and in any style.
Demand for places in the class has been
extremely strong and so I operate a waiting list and ask for your
patience!
I book a variety of male and female
models. Usually there are two models, male and female. Each week I focus on some aspect of life drawing which is
outlined in an illustrated handout.
Fixative- Free Studio! Please note that for health reasons
fixative (or hair spray) should not be used inside the building at any time.
Other high vapour materials may need to be restricted. How to
preserve your charcoal and pastel drawings.

The teaching topics are broadly structured
as follows:
Term 1: Basic drawing techniques, quick
sketches, heads, proportion, charcoal, anatomy, artist examples,
experimentation.
Term 2: Sustained drawing, foreshortening, hands and feet, drawing light, varied
drawing and painting media, shadows, portraits.
Term 3: Drawing with colour, pastel techniques, sketchbooks,
backgrounds, artist examples.
Each class follows a similar pattern:
7.00 Starting pose, often with the
model in clothes or with a drape
7.20 Outline of teaching topic with poses of 1 - 30 minutes
7.50 Break
8.05 One or two longer poses
9.05 Brief display of a selection of drawings (voluntary)
9.15 Class ends. Our contract with the University means that
we have to leave on time.

How to find the Life Room (Room 211 Rus) at Anglia Ruskin
University
Travelling east along Mill Road take the second left, Guest Road,
and then turn right at the end into Collier Road.
The ARU site is on the corner. On entering the ARU site
turn left and walk 50 metres. Enter the Ruskin Building (look
for the red bricks and the name by the door!) Once inside Ruskin turn
left until you reach Forensic Science Labs. Go up the stairs to the first floor and
Room 211 is on the right.

Parking
There is plenty of on-street parking (after 5pm) off Mill
Road in the streets adjacent to the Ruskin Building: Guest Road, Collier
Road and McKenzie Road. Remember to avoid the residents parking which
does not expire until 8 pm. (Alternatively park in Adam and Eve
Street, off East Road, opposite the ARU main entrance. There is some
on-street parking and the pay and
display car park is free after 7 pm.)
History of the class
There used to be life drawing classes at almost all the local community
colleges in Cambridgeshire under the direction of the County Council's
wide ranging evening class programme - the term Community College
indicating both child and adult education. Unfortunately adult
education has virtually been abandoned in Cambridgeshire.
The notable exception in Cambridge being Hills Road Sixth Form
College where a wide variety of classes are offered. Our class
transferred from Parkside Community College to Anglia Ruskin in
September 2006 where it is now run on a private basis.
