23rd September 2012 - 21st October 2012
Sunday 3.00 - 5.30 pm
(Doors open 2.30 pm)

Sunday afternoon art room laziness

Lounge in the comfortable chairs with a sketchbook, sit sullenly at a table or stand intently at an easel. Anything goes in this relaxed Sunday afternoon class.  With a variety of models, materials available to buy and a flow of tea, coffee and biscuits, you can allow the artist within some quality time.

You set the pace.  So if you just want to draw you can get on without fuss.  But if you are starting out and want a few pointers then the regular class demonstration will help you develop your skills.

You can just turn up on Sunday just before 3pm, no need to book.  You can pay-as-you go.  We have two great models for you to draw. Sundays will never be same again.   Hope to see you!

What is the topic?

23 September Sculpture Drawing Create form and solidity modelling the charcoal like clay and working out from the centre towards the surface.  Demonstration 3.15 pm

30 September  Exaggerated Line Observe intently every nuance of the contour so that your drawing is sharp and full of character.   Demonstration 3.15 pm

7 October  Painterly Drawing Hatching, planes, tones and half-tones. As a painter you might be more interested in the surface and the tonality. Half close your eyes to assess the relative tone of each area.  Demonstration 3.15 pm

14 October Off-centre, Close-up or Diagonal Explore how to use composition to create stand-out drawings. Avoid the inevitable central frontality—especially in the placing of the head.

How to get there
Buchan Street is a large modern spacious hall, north of central Cambridge,  just off Kings Hedges Road.  Get there by cycle, bus or car. Walking is not recommended from the centre of town, it is too far.  There is a small supermarket next to the centre. If you walk or take the bus or taxi there will certainly be someone who can give you a lift back.  So you've just gotta get there!  Map

Bus:

ake the Citi 1 (every 30 minutes on Sundays)  from Cambridge rail station (14.05) via the city centre (St Andrews Street stop S1  14.15) towards Arbury.  For simplicity, stay on the bus until  Armitage Way - the stop after Cambridge Regional College.  Then walk 5 minutes along Kings Hedges Road. The bus takes 30 minutes from the rail station and is rather tedious.  My map

What to bring

You can use any materials you wish.  On your first visit I recommend that you use materials you are familiar with, such as charcoal, pastel or pencil.   We have boards and clips, usually resting a board on a chair in front.   Some students bring their own easel.  There is paper, charcoal and erasers, and other assorted materials for you to use.  Tea, coffee and biscuits are supplied free but you do have to wash your own cups!

What to expect?

I try to start promptly.  We usually begin with a starting pose of ten to twenty minutes so that you can get some drawing as soon as possible.  The demonstration will begin around 3.20 pm and will last approximately 20 minutes.  But if you prefer you can continue with your own drawing.    There is a break of fifteen minutes with self-service tea and coffee after which we have one pose.  At the end of the class I encourage you to select one drawing for a brief exhibition, although there is no pressure on you to display your work.

Fixative- Free Studio!

Please note that for health reasons  fixative (or hair spray) should not be used inside the building at any time.   Other high vapour materials may need to be restrictedHow to preserve your charcoal and pastel drawings.

Hope to see you!

Well so much information.  Much too scary, possibly.  And so the only way you are going to find out if the class can work for you is by coming along!  So enough words.  Time for drawing!  See you there.
