Ever wanted to draw?
What are the secret
methods artists use? Here is your chance to
learn how to do it properly. You will be guided by the
step by step demonstrations and find support with artist Derek Batty. There
is a friendly atmosphere and you will be welcomed whether
you are a beginner or more experienced artist.
You can just turn up on Friday night, no need to
book and there is a pay-as-you go option. We have two great models
for you to draw. There are materials for you to use and others
to buy, so the only thing to
bring is yourself! Hope to see you!

What's
the topic?
04-May-12 Repetition and rehearsal
Get it right with practice but also make it art! Draw the same pose
more than once on the same sheet so that you create two figures together.
11-May-12 Developing a line in
watercolour Excellent watercolour technique for the class with
guaranteed results every time. Good for quick sketches or longer
studies. Demonstration 7.15pm
18-May-12 Negative Space on
distressed paper Paint your figure before the class! Well almost,
because I'd like you to wash over some paper with a light array of colours
in advance. Think of sunsets, or veined marble, or a bleached oak door. In
class all you need to do is paint in the surrounding space to create your
figure (and maybe add one or two extra lines). Pre-distressed paper
available.
26-May-12 Washes, stains and
intense colour Make Leonardo's damp stained walls come to life by
creating drawings in watercolour which look as though they are
accidentally made in nature. Think rusty old hulks, mouldy murals, lichen
rooftops and moss-covered patio paths. Demonstration 7.15pm 01-June-12
Ballet Class Movement, drama and music as dancers in costume
or not strike ballet poses. |

How
to get there
Buchan Street is a large modern spacious hall, north of
central Cambridge, just off Kings Hedges Road. Get there by cycle,
bus or car. Walking is not recommended from the centre of town, it
is too far. There is a cafe and
supermarket next to the centre. If you walk or take the bus or taxi
there will certainly be someone who can give you a lift back. So
you've just gotta get there!
Bicycle
20 minute ride from the
city centre. Follow signs to CRC
Kings Hedges and Buchan Street. Get the map by
clicking here or below, or google the postcode CB4 2XF.
Bus:
Either
Take the Citi 1 (every 10
minutes) from Cambridge rail station via the city centre (St Andrews
Street or Bridge Street opposite Cafe Rouge) towards Arbury. For
simplicity, stay on the bus until Armitage Way - the stop after
CRC. Then walk 5 minutes along Kings Hedges Road. The bus takes 40 minutes from the rail station and
is rather tedious. My map

you are lucky!)
Or
Take the new Guided Bus route B to Orchard Park
West. From Cambridge, depart Drummer Street at 1831 and from the other
direction, St Ives bus station bay 3 departs 1833.

Car
Free parking. Buchan
Street is very close to the A14 (Histon and Milton interchanges)
off Kings Hedges Road. 1 km distant from Cambridge Regional
College (CRC). Get the map by clicking on the link below.
Walk
Please only walk only if you are a dedicated hiker and it is a fine
day. Buchan Street is 45 minutes from the city centre.

| What
to bring
You can use any materials you
wish. On your first visit I recommend that you use materials you
are familiar with, such as charcoal, pastel or pencil. We
have boards and clips, usually resting a board on a chair in
front. Some students bring their own easel. There is
paper, charcoal and erasers, and other assorted
materials for you to use. Tea, coffee and biscuits are supplied
free but you do have to wash your own cups! |
| What
to expect?
I try to start promptly. We
usually begin with a starting pose of ten to twenty minutes so that you
can get some drawing as soon as possible. The demonstration will
begin around 7.20 pm and will last approximately 20 minutes. But
if you
prefer you can continue with your own drawing. There is a break of
fifteen minutes with
self-service tea and coffee after which we have
one pose. At the end of the class I encourage you to select one
drawing for a brief exhibition, although there is no pressure on you to
display your work. |
| Fixative- Free Studio!
Please note that for health reasons
fixative (or hair spray) should not be used inside the building at any time.
Other high vapour materials may need to be restricted. How to
preserve your charcoal and pastel drawings. |
| Hope
to see you!
Well so much information. Much too scary,
possibly. And so the only way you are going to find out if the
class can work for you is by coming along! So enough words.
Time for drawing! See you there.
