A new term of life drawing which will cover basic drawing techniques for those new to the class, and also look at how you can use water-based media for your life sketches.  This will include working in pen and ink to create alluring single-line drawings as well as developing the line with hatching and cross-hatching.

Later in the term you could follow me as I graduate from a pen to a brush, and from ink to watercolour.

The topics however are additional to the basic format of the class.  I alternate male and female models each week, and you are welcome to draw in any style or media.

Looking forward to drawing again with you.

Topic

1

11-Apr-16

Three On The Go Continuously   Develop the skill of drawing moving subjects as the model rotates through a repetition of three poses.

2

18-Apr-16

Erotic Line and Wash using Quink ink or watercolour pencils.   Follow in the footsteps of August Rodin and Egon Schiele to create stunning line drawings using the blind contour method.  Apply water to the dried Quink line to make the wash effect.

25-Apr-16

 * No class due to building work at Artworks. *

BH

02-May-16

Bank Holiday – no class

3

09-May-16

Hands and Feet   Outline each cell of the fingers and toes.  Use the natural creases, folds and forms of the hand and foot to give emphasis to the structure and personality of these difficult details

4

16-May-16

Pen and Ink Shading for a Sketchbook   Hatching and cross-hatching is good for small-scale intricate work.   Spring shading lines off the edges.  By using ink you are forced to be bold and committed but pencils are also suitable.

Demonstration

5

23-May-16

Three-Toned Ink and Brush   Graduate from drawing with a pen to painting with ink.  Make a weak wash and a mid-tone wash in wide containers (carry out trays are good).  Begin with the weak wash and your largest brush.  As you gain confidence gradually increase the tonality towards black.

Bank Holiday – no class

06-Jun-16

Classes cancelled to allow for refurbishment of the Artspace venue.

On the Beach with Eric Fischl   Use a brush and place two or more figures on each page.  Deft outlines using a watery wash to start, stronger mixtures to finish.

7

13-Jun-16

Developing a Line in Watercolour   Excellent watercolour technique for the class with guaranteed results every time.  Good for quick sketches or longer studies.

Demonstration

8

20-Jun-16

Landscape Nude   Look for the landscape of the figure:  emphasise distance not only with proportion, for example by making the head smaller, but also by emphasizing near-to elements, bolder, sharper and more colourful.

9

27-Jun-16

Portrait with a Brush    A sketch of the shape of the head loosely positions the portrait on the paper; but the drawing begins properly as you work from the eyes, mark by mark, each feature referenced to the previous form.

Demonstration

04-Jul-16

Longer Pose    Select one or two drawings from the term to help you focus on a sustained image.  Avoid giving up on a picture at the first hurdle.   Progress is made by correcting and pushing on with determined creativity.
