Well who would have thought we would be in September again? At the beginning of our drawing year I hope to remind you of some of the basic aspects of life drawing and presenting them in a challenging format.

Structure, shading, negative space and proportion lay the groundwork for exploring imaginative ideas later in the term.

I always try to find good artist examples for us to study and there can be few more suitable exemplars than the 18th century artist Pierre Paul Prud'hon. His classical style simplifies light and shade to create a sublime figure separate from the routine of the workaday world.

As usual I will book two models, male and female for each class. You are welcome to draw in any material or style and follow your own instincts if you wish.

	29 Sep 08	1.	Reverse how you look. By noticing the shape of the spaces around the figure you can easily draw difficult poses.
	6 Oct 08	2.	Near and Far. Getting proportion right by putting two figures on the page. Proportion involves relating one thing to another: lifting your eye from what you are drawing and seeing how it fits with everything else.
	13 Oct 08	3.	Prud'hon Nudes. Find inspiration from Pierre Paul's magnificent drawings. Work on blue paper with both black and white chalks.	Look up Prud'hon on the internet using the google image search. Let me show you how.
	20 Oct 08	4.	Three view portrait study: full face, profile and three quarter view. Is this the most difficult class of the year? Demonstration 7.15 pm	Draw you own head from different angles using two mirrors.
	27 Oct 08	5.	Seeing more! Not just a random collection of curved and straight lines but ordered and simplified. How real and imaginary structures give strength to your drawing.
3 Nov 08		6.	Line drawing with ink. Be bold and commit yourself to the image by using ink. Explore your use of line beyond outline. Demonstration 7.15 pm	Ink and dip pen is recommended for this class. The nib and nib holder are bought separately, total cost about £3.50.
10 Nov 08		7.	Close Up. By going in close you can work on a bigger scale. Create massive undulating forms like an abstract landscape or join up several pieces to create the largest drawing ever.
17 Nov 08		8.	Water, wind and rain. Bring the weather into the studio and make your figures react to the environment. Before the class use your sketchbook to record what is distinctive about autumn weather.	Bring photos of reflections, underwater, rain and wind.
24 Nov 08		9.	Coloured Lights. Respond to the warmth of the yellow and red filters applied to the spotlights or the coolness of the situation seen through a blue filter.
1 Dec 08		10.	One Pose. Time for a longer study or two or three sketches from different views. Photography is permitted in this class with our models permission, so you can continue after the end of the pose.
8 Dec 08		11.	The Changing Room. Scenes and events getting ready for sport and exercise, or recovering from it.
15 Dec 08			No Class
26 Jan 09			Start of new Spring Term

Payment

Choose a method to suit your circumstances:

· On the day for maximum flexibility: £13.50 per class.

· Book of Five Vouchers: £61. No need to worry about when you can attend. Each voucher is good for one class. Valid for 12 consecutive classes. Can also be used at my class at Anglia Ruskin University on Monday evenings.

· In Advance Autumn Term (11 weeks) £106 Reward your commitment! You can pay by instalments - write two cheques (£53 / £53) one post-dated 3rd November 2008. Cheques should be made payable to Derek Batty. Make up any missed classes on Monday mornings at Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre.

Internet Banking: You can make a payment over the internet. Send me an email and I will give you the relevant details which are also printed in the class handout.

Materials

Basic materials are available for you to buy in the class including charcoal, putty rubbers, newsprint, cartridge paper and sugar paper. Other materials are provided for you to try out, including those specified in the programme. So no need to worry about bringing in the right things! Health note: please do not use fixative (or hairspray!) inside the building.

Directions

Enter at the main door of the Ruskin building. Turn left and go through two sets of double doors. Turn right and go up the stairs. Ruskin 211 is at the top of the stairs. If you have trouble finding the room on the night call me on 07913 104569.

Models tip: voluntary donation at the end of the class - suggested amount 60p.
